Bike ‘n Hike Lava Lands
When: 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, July 10, 2026
Meet at the Sun Lava Trail trailhead off Circle 7 in Sunriver. Parking is free in the adjacent gravel/dirt parking area. Here’s a link to the trail map. You’ll see the parking area just off Circle 7 where the Deschutes River Trail and the Sun-Lava Paved Path meet.
Description:
This is a bike and hike combo. We’ll bike up the paved Sun Lava trail to Lava Lands Visitor Center, taking as many breathers as we need along the way. At Lava Lands, we’ll lock our bikes in the bike racks and hike the easy Trail of the Molten Lands, an easy 1.2 mile hike with a 132 foot elevation gain. We’ll have a picnic brunch/lunch at the visitor center and then cruise back down the paved path to the trail head. The total biking distance is 11.2 miles, 5.6 each way. We’ll likely be back to Circle 7 by 11 or 11:30, but I’ve included some extra time so we can take the ascent as slowly as we want.
Note: if we have mountain biking volunteers willing to lead an off-road ascent and/or descent, you’ll have the option of riding the Blackrock mountain bike trail.
Before you arrive for the ride, please read the guidelines for group rides here. If you need a visual reminder on commonly used bike signals, it’s available here.
