    Ascents and Descents Ride

We are lucky to live by many mountain bike trails. One of the closest mountain bike trails is the Roundabout trail. The Roundabout trail is considered an intermediate trail mostly because of its ascents and descents and rock gardens.

During this clinic, we will be sessioning ascents and descents only. We will NOT ride the entire Roundabout trail. The first .66 mile of this ride is fairly level single-track trail. From the .66 mile mark to the 1.21 mile mark, the trail ascends from grades that vary between 1% and 7%. At the 1.21 mile mark, we will rest, hydrate and debrief the ascent. After assessing the group, we will decide if we will practice a descent to the Elko viewpoint or practice our descent back to the starting point.

Bring water and snacks. A helmet is required. A front suspension or full suspension bike with a dropper post is also required.  Sunriver Sports and Village Bike and Ski will offer discounts to those of you who mention you are taking this class through the SRWC Mountain Biking Club.  Make sure that the bike shop adjusts the dropper post to your height.

Meet at the Central Oregon Trailhead Alliance (COTA) kiosk (on the other side of the Cardinal bridge) at the arrive-by time of 10 a.m. Roll-out time is 10:15 a.m.  Mechelle Griffin will lead this ride, maximum 14 riders.

    Deschutes and McGregor Loop

Description of Hike. The Deschutes River Loop is a 3+ mile trail through La Pine State Park. This loop takes hikers alongside a large section of the Deschutes River, including McGregor Viewpoint, and through some nice Ponderosa Pine Forest. There are several starting points for this trail. Perhaps best is the trailhead just before the campground. Starting from here and hiking in a clockwise direction, you’ll share a path with the McGregor Trail for a while.Continue through some nice young pine forest, and walk past two junctions - each with the Falls River Trail. You’ll soon come to the McGregor Viewpoint, a great view of a sweeping bend in the Deschutes River.Right after this the Deschutes River Loop splits from the McGregor Trail. You’ll cross the paved State Park Road then resume walking alongside the river. The trail parallels the river for quite a while. You’ll walk past the campground area then the terrain starts to open up as the forest thins. The trail curves right and leaves the river as the forest again starts to thicken. The remainder of the trail is smooth and gentle through the woods until you once again reach the point where you began.

Distance in miles. 4.3 miles with elevation gain of 85 ft.

Where to meet. Carpool from parking lot between Village Grill and 1st Interstate  8:00am

Hike leader and co-leader Sheila Schmerber and Martha Sharman
