    MidSoles Hike:  Black Butte Trail

    When: Thursday July 3, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the SCF Church parking lot at 18139 Cottonwood Rd to carpool or meet at 9:30 a.m. at the trailhead. Bring $5 for the driver if carpooling.

    Description:

Black Butte's summit is a must see for anyone living in Central Oregon. 4.1 Miles, 1558 ft elevation gain and just a half mile on the trail you will rise above the dense tree line and gain breathtaking views of huge volcanoes: Broken Top, The Three Sisters, Mount Washington, and Three Fingered Jack. Once at the summit, Mount Jefferson and potentially Mount Hood come into view to complete the 360-degree Cascade panorama. The hike is rewarding in all kinds of conditions: pick a day with low lying clouds and you will burst through them as you climb up, or stay for sunset and be treated to one of the finest light shows Oregon has to offer. Black Butte is actually an ancient composite volcano, not a cinder cone or butte. In fact, it is older than the much taller neighboring peaks just on the horizon. Geologists were able to date it using the time of the last magnetic polarity shift of the earth, approximately 780,000 years ago.  Best hiked Mid-May through mid-November

When considering signing up for this hike, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this trail meets your fitness level.

Gear: Water, snacks, $ for going out to lunch afterwards (optional), hiking poles (optional), sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing, personal first aid supplies, insect repellent.

May require a parking permit that can be purchased at the parking lot.

    Sunset/Moonrise Hike up Lava Butte

    When: Wednesday, July 9,  7 p.m.

    Info :

Join us to hike up Lava Butte (Kick Butte Challenge participants who couldn’t make the June 25th date can use this for a make-up day) to watch the sun set while we watch the moon rise.  Sunset for this date is 8:49pm, and Moon rise is 8:39pm.

Meet at the Lava Butte Visitors Center Parking Lot, ready to hike at 7 p.m. sharp.

    Description:

This is a 3.8 mile hike with 587 ft of elevation gain. We will begin hiking at 7pm to have plenty of time to hike up and walk around the rim while we watch the sun begin to set.

The trail is a fairly steep incline as it winds around the butte mostly on a paved road. When reaching the peak, we will be rewarded with expansive vistas of the Cascade Range, providing insight into the region’s spectacular geologic past. Wildlife birds, squirrels, deer and elk are frequently seen.

When considering signing up for this hike, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this trail meets your fitness level.

    Gear:

Sunscreen, bug spray, hat, personal first aid supplies, water, and snacks/drinks of choice. Hiking poles can be useful since it is a steep incline, and sturdy hiking shoes. Dressing in layers is a good idea as the temperature will drop as the sun begins to set, and you may have gotten very warm on the way up. No special parking permits required.

    Vista Butte Hike

    When:  8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23

We’ll meet at the Country Store parking lot at 8:30  a.m. and carpool to the butte. (The time could be earlier if the forecast is for hot weather.) Drive up Spring River Road and  continue to the Bachelor Junction. Turn right on Century Drive, go just past where the highway divides, and the vista Butte  parking  is a wide spot on the OTHER side of the road. So you need to do either a U-turn or dive down Century until you can turn around to reach the parking. Bring $3 to pay drivers.

Description:  For a hike that’s just short of five miles roundtrip and a little over 600 feet of  elevation gain (633), the reward at the top  of Vista Butte is great -- outstanding views at 6,619 feet.  Much of the hike is on mountain bike trails, but they’re not generally busy.  The trail is not particularly rocky. There is a kick-up in elevation  just  before you reach the top. We will have to make sure ahead of time that  the trail is pretty much clear of snow for us to do this hike.

    Here’s the All Trails link:

    https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/oregon/vista-butte-trail

When considering signing up for this hike, please review the specifics (e.g. distance, elevation gain, trail surface - gravel, rocky, soft sand etc.) to determine if this trail meets your fitness level.

Gear:  Wear sturdy boots and  layered clothing, bring a hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellant and plenty of water. It could be windy at the summit. We recommend hiking poles. We’ll settle in at the top for a snack or lunch and wander around to take in the views.

    Description:

Discover this 13.3-mile out-and-back trail (2700 ft elevation gain); generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 6 h 36 min to complete. The Bend Glacier and No Name Lake route is an exceptionally great hike. This trail features beautiful views of Broken Top and South Sister on the way up and then moves up the ridge on the other side of No Name Lake, which is absolutely stunning. Most of the hike has a gentle increase in elevation until about 2 miles to the summit. There are a few steep inclines, and poles can be a great way to get extra support on the way up. Once you reach No Name Lake, it is definitely worth it to hike the extra half mile or so up to the ridge. There are fantastic views of the Sisters, and on a clear day, you can see all the way to Mount Hood and into Washington State.

After a flat stretch, we’ll begin an ascent on a series of switchbacks, cresting the plateau at about 1.5 miles and begin the loop along the edge of rim rock with beautiful views in every direction, then return back down the switchbacks. Good to hike all year long but could get hot in summer.

    Tamolitch Blue Pool

    When: Monday October 6, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the SCF Church parking lot at 18139 Cottonwood Rd to carpool or meet at 9:30 a.m. at the trailhead. Bring $5 for the driver if carpooling.

    Description:

TAMOLITCH BLUE POOL-3.9 mile out and back with 285 ft. elevation. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 1/2 hours to complete.  This short portion of the McKenzie River National Recreation Trail takes you to the beautiful turquoise Tamolitch Pool, also known as Blue Pool.  The beginning of this easy hike is through an old-growth Douglas fir forest.  As the McKenzie River falls away, you walk along a cliff and descend into a dry river bed which eventually comes to an old lava flow.  The trail is not too strenuous but there is some elevation gain as can be seen on the tracks and footing can be tricky in a few places.  Be advised the trail passes one ledge with a steep drop-off to the river a short distance before Blue Pool.  At Blue Pool, the water is 37 degrees year-round.  This pool is actually where the McKenzie River emerges after submerging into a lava tube at the Carmen Reservoir, creating the Tamolitch Falls. It’s known as a “dry fall” because during especially wet rainy winters the river will flood over the lava bed and waterfall into the Tamolitch Pool. Best hiked April thru June, October.
